Stunning scenery amid Georgia’s mountains and rushing waters makes this region a natural paradise for visitors. The northern part of the state is in the Blue Ridge Mountains area, and the highest point in Georgia is Brasstown Bald, 4,784 feet (1,458 m).
In the Atlanta area, World of Coke, Georgia Aquarium, Zoo Atlanta and Stone Mountain are important tourist attractions. The Georgia Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the world, is in Atlanta. Callaway Gardens, in western Georgia, is a family resort. The area is also popular with golfers. Outdoor recreational activities include hiking along the Appalachian Trail; Civil War Heritage Trails; rock climbing and whitewater paddling. Other outdoor activities include hunting and fishing.

Stunning scenery amid Maryland’s mountains and rushing waters makes this region a natural paradise for visitors. The western part of the state is in the Blue Ridge Mountains area and the highest point is Hoye Crest on Backbone Mountain, with an elevation of 3,360 feet (1,020 m), in the southwest corner of Garrett County, near the border with West Virginia. The westernmost counties of Maryland are considered part of Appalachia.
The ‘Mountain Side of Maryland’ was made with rest and relaxation in mind. Getting away to Western Maryland means freshwater fishing at Deep Creek Lake, playing golf, lounging at a lakeside cabin and enjoying the majestic panoramic view from a mountain resort. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, and depending on the season, try whitewater rafting, skiing, snowtubing, snowboarding and hiking. Plenty of places to take a walk or a bike ride along Appalachian trails.
Charming towns — Cumberland, Frostburg, Grantsville, Hagerstown, Oakland and Sharpsburg — offer an array of choices for lodging, shopping, antiquing, historic attractions and outdoor fun. Ride aboard a steam-engine train through the mountains, Antietam National Battlefield, the C&O Canal towpath, and camping at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park.

Stunning scenery amid North Carolina’s mountains and rushing waters makes this region a natural paradise for visitors. Located in the western part of the state are the Great Smoky Mountains, Blue Ridge Mountains, Great Balsam Mountains, and the Black Mountains. The Black Mountains are the highest in the Eastern United States, and culminate in Mount Mitchell at 6,684 feet (2,037 m). It is the highest point east of the Mississippi River. Every year the mountains attract several million tourists to the Western part of the state, including the historic Biltmore Estate. MerleFest in Wilkesboro attracts more than 80,000 people to its four-day music festival.
Some of North Carolina’s amenities include Carowinds amusement park, Charlotte Motor Speedway, U.S. National Whitewater Center, Discovery Place, Hickory Motor Speedway, RockBarn Golf and Spa, home of the Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn. North Carolina is also home to Krispy Kreme, Mayberry, Texas Pete, Lexington Barbecue Festival and Moravian cookies.

Stunning scenery amid Pennsylvania’s mountains and rushing waters makes this region a natural paradise for visitors. The middle part of the state is in the Blue Ridge Mountains area and the highest point is Mount Davis with an elevation of (3,213 ft or 979 m).
All 121 state parks in Pennsylvania feature free admission.
Laurel Highlands — Take one look at this hilly area along the westernmost ridges of the Appalachian Mountains, and you’ll understand what inspired Frank Lloyd Wright to make this the location of such masterpieces as Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. The rivers are overflowing with fish that’ll practically jump into your lap. And whitewater rafting, hiking and rock climbing are just a few of the activities that abound in this region.
The Alleghenies — In this Central PA region you’ll find covered bridges, tree-sheltered streams and little Victorian towns.
Dutch Country Roads — When a freshly prepared slice of shoofly pie comes calling, will you be there to answer? It’s Amish Country, so of course you will. But there’s more to this Dutch Country region than delicious homemade sweets. This is where the Old-World traditions like carriage rides and haystacks blend with the fun of roller coasters and luxury resorts. Take a look around and go where the country air takes you.

Stunning scenery amid South Carolina’s mountains and rushing waters makes this region a natural paradise for visitors. In the northwest corner of the state is the Blue Ridge Mountains area. The Cherokee Parkway is a scenic driving route through this area. This is where Table Rock State Park is located.
Highest in elevation is the Blue Ridge Region, containing an escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which continue into North Carolina and Georgia, as part of the southern Appalachian chain. Sassafras Mountain, South Carolina’s highest point at 3,560 feet (1,090 m) is located in this area. Also located in this area is Caesars Head State Park. The environment here is that of the Appalachian-Blue Ridge forests ecoregion. The Chattooga River, located on the border between South Carolina and Georgia, is a favorite whitewater rafting destination.

Stunning scenery amid Tennessee’s mountains and rushing waters makes this region a natural paradise for visitors. The Blue Ridge Mountains area lies on the eastern edge of Tennessee, bordering North Carolina. This region of Tennessee is characterized by the high mountains and rugged terrain of the western Blue Ridge Mountains, which are subdivided into several subranges, namely the Great Smoky Mountains, the Bald Mountains, the Unicoi Mountains, the Unaka Mountains and Roan Highlands, and the Iron Mountains.
The average elevation of the Blue Ridge area is 5,000 feet (1,500 m) above sea level. Clingmans Dome, the state’s highest point, is located in this region. The Blue Ridge area was never more than sparsely populated, and today much of it is protected by the Cherokee National Forest, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and several federal wilderness areas and state parks.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the nation’s most visited national park, is headquartered in the eastern part of the state, and a section of the Appalachian Trail roughly follows the Tennessee-North Carolina border. Other major tourist attractions include the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, the Parthenon, the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, and Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, and Elvis Presley’s Graceland residence and tomb in Memphis.

Stunning scenery amid Virginia’s mountains and rushing waters makes this region a natural paradise for visitors. The western part of the state is in the Blue Ridge Mountains area and the highest point being Mount Rogers at 5,729 feet (1,746 m). Virginia has 30 National Park Service units, such as Great Falls Park and the Appalachian Trail, and one national park, the Shenandoah National Park. Shenandoah was established in 1935 and encompasses the scenic Skyline Drive.
The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival is a six-day festival held annually in Winchester that includes parades and bluegrass concerts. The Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention in Galax, begun in 1935, is one of the oldest and largest such events worldwide. Two important film festivals, the Virginia Film Festival and the VCU French Film Festival, are held annually in Charlottesville and Richmond, respectively.
Some of North Carolina’s amenities include Richmond International Raceway, Martinsville Speedway, Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Peaks of Otter, Mabry Mill and the Blue Ridge Music Center.
The Nelson Scenic Loop in Nelson County is 50 miles incorporating the Blue Ridge Parkway with spurs leading to hiking, biking, birding, amazing scenery like Crabtree Falls and tasty wineries and breweries.
The Highlands Scenic Byway is a 19 mile loop between Clifton Forge and Lexington. The scenic drive is a must-see experience for all visiting Virginia’s Western Highlands and makes the outdoors and nature accessible even to those who would rather not hike into a wilderness area.
Motorcyclists especially enjoy the winding cut-backs of Back of the Dragon, a “two lane ribbon” that courses between Tazewell and Marion in Southwest Virginia.

Stunning scenery amid West Virginia’s mountains and rushing waters makes this region a natural paradise for visitors. The eastern part of the state is in the Blue Ridge Mountains area and the highest point is Spruce Knob, at 4,863 feet (1,482 m) at the summit of Spruce Mountain, the highest peak in the Allegheny Mountains.
The state is noted for its mountains, its historically significant logging and coal mining industries, and its political and labor history. It is also known for a wide range of outdoor recreational opportunities, including skiing, whitewater rafting, fishing, hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, recreational caving, and hunting.
Tourist sites include the New River Gorge Bridge, Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and many state parks. The Greenbrier hotel and resort, originally built in 1778, has long been considered a premier hotel frequented by numerous world leaders and U.S. Presidents over the years. West Virginia is also home to the Green Bank Telescope at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.
West Virginia’s folk heritage is a part of the Appalachian folk music tradition, and includes styles of fiddling, ballad singing, and other styles that draw on Scots-Irish music. Camp Washington-Carver, a Mountain Cultural Arts Center located at Clifftop in Fayette County, hosts an annual Appalachian String Band Festival.
